Records Fall at ISU Classic - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - Iowa State Cyclones SportsPublished by
AMES, Iowa- For the second straight
home meet, an Iowa State athlete shattered a school record, as
sophomore Lisa Koll ran a 15:52.37 in the 5,000-meter run at Friday’s
ISU Classic, breaking her old school record of 16:15.65. Koll’s time ensures the Fort Dodge native a spot in the 5,000-meter
run at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, meeting the NCAA
automatic qualifying standard of 16:08. Teammate Grace Kemmey also
earned a provisional-qualifying time, running 16:41.65 and placing
fifth in the event.
"It feels really good," Koll said. "To
run 15:52 is way beyond my expectation, and it was a lot easier than I
thought it was going to be. I am still kind of shocked. To hold the
second-fastest time in the nation is awesome, and it gives me a lot of
confidence going into the Big 12 and national meet." The clocking is the second-fastest time in the nation going into the
weekend, and is also a meet and Lied track record. Koll outdistanced
her closest competitor by nearly 35 seconds. The sophomore placed 12th
in the 5,000-meters at last year’s national meet, and now is one of the
best runners of the country. “Lisa Koll was tremendous tonight, she shattered the school,
facility and meet record,” said Iowa State head track and field coach
Corey Ihmels. “We knew she was ready to run well, and she went out and
ran the second best time in the country all by herself. Now we get back
to training and get ready for the conference meet.” The men’s distance runners also shined on Friday. Sophomore Kiel Uhl
finished runner-up behind ISU assistant coach Blake Boldon in the
5,000-meter run with a time of 14:13.37. The Des Moines-Roosevelt
alumnus stuck with Boldon for much of the race, and the two separated
themselves from the rest of the pack early on. “Kiel was really excited about his race as well,” Ihmels said. “He
struggled a little bit in the race late, but still finished pretty
well. We just have to get him some rest and back to square one. He will
be ready to go in two weeks at the conference meet.” Lashawn Wright secured another personal best in the 200-meter dash,
earning a time of 24.48. The Mesquite, Texas native ran her previous
best 24.49 at the ISU Open earlier this semester. Wright earned eighth
in the event out of 139 athletes. In the first event of the day, Ryan Paul wrapped up his inaugural
competition of the season in the heptathlon. The sophomore earned
eighth with 4,598 points. Bryan Clay of Nike won the event with 6,192
points. “Everybody came out today and competed hard, and we had some good
things happen.” Ihmels said. “We just have to keep working hard, and
obviously we want to come back tomorrow and have an even better day.” Events begin tomorrow with the women’s 3,000-meter run at 9:25 a.m.
